What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe consisting of a few essentials. They are usually higher quality items in neutral colors and timeless styles. The clothing is not super trendy and will not go out of style quickly. The idea is to minimize the wardrobe with pieces that can mix and match together creating multiple outfits without the need for additional pieces of clothing. The Washington Post covered the trendy topic mentioning that in order for a capsule wardrobe to work for the long term, you’ll need to spend some time and money upfront to find high-quality items that fit. This type of wardrobe usually consists of around 30 pieces.
Is a Capsule Wardrobe Right for You?
If you find yourself thinking about making the change and heading away from consumerism, towards the more minimal capsule wardrobe idea, here are some things to consider.
Capsule Wardrobe Basics…
- Reduces the number of items in your closet = saves time and $
- Eliminates decision fatigue – less to select from = faster decision making
- No two capsule wardrobes are identical – depending on your lifestyle the needs and items will be different
- Everything must fit – items in the closet that don’t fit must be discarded
- Items should be interchangeable and can easily be mixed to create a variety of outfits
- Quality over quantity is a must
- Pajamas, undergarments, workout gear and swim attire are not included
If you are trying to simplify and minimize you have probably read that a capsule wardrobe is one way to achieve this. Luckily the requirements for a capsule wardrobe can be individualized. You can implement this idea how it works best for you. I know I wouldn’t be happy if I eliminated my wardrobe to 30 pieces, but I also know I could be more mindful of the items in my closet that I am not wearing and donate them. If you have been exploring the capsule wardrobe idea but still aren’t sure about it you don’t have to go all in.
Make it work for you!
If you aren’t sure about donating 85% of your closet to create a capsule wardrobe there are plenty of other options with some of the same benefits. Remember that everything you own is taking up your time (and closet space). Keep the pieces you love and feel good in. Let go of the clothing that isn’t being worn. If an item isn’t serving you, get rid of it. Maybe a good closet clean out is all you need. Follow these steps for a complete closet purge and you will be that much closer to a minimal wardrobe without taking that capsule wardrobe leap….just yet.
What do you think? Is a capsule wardrobe in your future?
