The comment I hear the most sounds something like this, “I want to get organized, I just don’t know where to begin.”
Organizing your home or office can seem like a daunting task. If you think about every closet, cabinet, garage and room in your house of course you will be overwhelmed. If you want to tackle the clutter you must break it down, break it way way down. It’s not about organizing the entire house or even an entire room. Think baby steps…remember Bob, from What About Bob…baby steps apply to getting organized too.
If you want to spruce up any area you have to break it down to sections. Let’s take your home office as an example. You probably have some of the following in your home office; desk, file cabinet, bookshelf, closet and maybe additional storage pieces. It doesn’t matter where you begin just pick one of those areas and follow these 5 basic organizing rules for each area.
5 Steps to a Clutter Free Home…
- Empty and Clean what you are organizing
- Touch EVERY item individually and decide what you will do with it…KEEP, TOSS or DONATE
- Sort items that are to be kept, grouping like items together
- Find proper storage for items that are staying and put away
- Toss the trash and donate the rest
Watch my Insta Stories to see how I do this with my clients and in my own home. If it becomes overwhelming just remember to take baby steps and break it down to smaller projects within the big room or house. You can do this! Once you kill the clutter you will feel much better about your space and moving on to the next room or project will be easier.
